MOTHER EARTH
“The Mother Earth series presents images that are deeply personal and intimate. While they primarily focus on our planet, they also reflect the photographer’s everyday life—his thoughts on the meaning of life, joy, and sorrow. Many of the photographs are open to personal interpretation; they ask questions and invite you, the viewer, to reflect on the image and its message more than once before understanding it.”
The photographic presentation is based on Mats Andersson’s latest book Mother Earth, which has received international acclaim and was nominated for Sweden’s Publishingpriset in 2023. A large solo exhibition featuring Mother Earth images was showcased at the Abecita Art Museum in Borås in early 2025.
Mats Andersson studied photography among other subjects at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. Since 1990, he has worked as an Art Director and photographer at the advertising agency Concret Reklam in Jönköping. Since 2009, Mats has focused on artistic and nature photography. He has published 13 books and has received over 50 international awards for his photography since 2009. After winning Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2016 (the world championship of nature photography), his work has been exhibited in over 20 countries around the world.
Mats Andersson is a Leica Ambassador. He has received grants from the Swedish Authors’ Fund in 2014, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. He was named Nordic Nature Photographer of the Year in 2016 and Nature Photographer of the Year by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in the same year.
